Erlang and REST – an interview with Steve Vinoski

There are people who you meet and you say to yourself, “how can this guy be so good at so many things?” Steve Vinoski is one of those people. He has a wonderful interview, recorded at Erlang Factory, where he discusses the key concepts of RPC frameworks such as CORBA, and how that compares to REST, and how Erlang fits into both worlds. Interview is here. Steve is the author and maintainer of Yaws, the Erlang web server that makes apache cry like a baby.

  1. Hi Chad, thank you for your kind words. But note that Claes “Klacke” Wikström, one of the greatest and most innovative Erlang developers ever, is the author of Yaws. I just help him extend and maintain it.

  2. Steve definitely knows his stuff. When I was doing CORBA in 1998, Steve’s book was the bible on CORBA. I hope he will have time to also write a book on Erlang. Joe Armstrong’s and Francesco Cesarini & Simon Thompson’s books are great, but it would be nice to have insightful contribution from Steve Vinoski.

I’ve learned Erlang, on and off, since 2005, it’s for personal gratification only. But recently, I’m digging deeper to see how Erlang can be used in large volume trading systems, with processes and workflows, rules and complex event processing.
